This annual Nights of Lights event, rich in history and tradition, transforms the nation’s oldest city into a dazzling wonderland of over three million tiny white lights. From late November to late January, visitors can explore the Old World streets by foot, horse and carriage ride, or even on a special holiday town trolley lights tour.

History of the Holiday Lighting Displays

The Night of Lights in St. Augustine is rooted in a cherished Spanish tradition. It dates back to the custom of placing white candles in windows during Christmas.

This practice symbolized the hospitality extended to Mary and Joseph, who sought shelter on their journey. By lighting candles, families created a warm welcome for guests and symbolically made room in their homes for Jesus. Over the years, this tradition has evolved into a grand holiday-style display of stunning lights, which serves as a reminder of the city’s 450-year history.
